Ephesus was, in Ancient Times, one of the 12 cities of Greek Ionia, as well as a renowned seaport known for its great temple to Artemis, one of the 7 Wonders of the World. It later became one of the centers of dawning Christianity thanks to St. Paul and St. John. However, the harbor silted up and the city declined rapidly, and has become known again only through archeological excavations of the wonderful ancient remains.
