Pamukkale is Turkish for "cotton castle". Indeed, it is the site of limestone-laden thermal springs. These have resulted over the ages in particularly spectacular open-air white concretions. In fact, it is because of the known therapeutic virtues of the water that the Greeks had already settled the place, the remains of Hierapolis being visible on the site.
