In ancient days, it used to be a gulf of the Aegean sea. However, the river Great Meander had it the other way, bringing alluvial deposits and cutting off access to the sea. The resulting lake became pretty calm: the seaport collapsed, orthodox monks chose the site as a retirement dwelling place. Today, only a few fishermen live around the lake, surrounded by scenic mountains.
